Are you ready for the ALMA Awards?

By Carolina

I am totally stoked…. because the 2011 NCLR ALMA Awards are nearly here! To give a brief description to those of you who don’t know about it, the ALMA Awards is a tribute awards show sponsored by National Council of La Raza (NCLR) that commemorates Latinos in entertainment, whether it be film, television, or music. In previous years, the ALMA Awards have honored and featured Latinos/Latinas like Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria, Shakira, Edward James Olmos, and more.

So okay, it may seem like a cheesy thing to get excited about, but one of the reasons I am really looking forward to it is because during one “town hall” session that I attended at the last NCLR conference, the moderator for the panel of speakers asked something to the effect of, “What do you do personally to make sure that Latinos are represented in the media, or are portrayed in a fair and accurate way?”. That’s when one of the panelists responded something like, “Well we do our part to exhibit Latino actors or entertainers in our respective media, but it is also part of the consumer to demand it as well. If we feature shows or articles with Latinos, we want to make sure that people are tuning in or reading what we put out there…the role of the consumer is important.”

But here comes the BEST news:

In order to get people to cheer on and support the Latinos and Latinas in entertainment, NCLR is recruiting young people ages 14-26 to join the “Fan Zone” at the ALMA Awards event held in Santa Monica, CA!

It is a really fun and amazing opportunity for those of you in the Southern California region to dress up, take pictures, and cheer on artists like Christina Aguilera, Jessica Alba, Antonio Banderas, and more as  they walk the red carpet! If you are interested in getting tickets to join the fan zone, please email: leadership@nclr.org

Don’t live in Southern California? Don’t worry, you can still join in the fun and support the ALMA Awards by:

  • Tuning in! You can watch it in the comfort of your own home when it airs Sept. 16th at 8/7C on NBC. In fact, one idea that I saw on their Facebook page was to host your own watch party! (It’s actually a really cute idea, since the website provides personalized invitations, recipes for snacks, and trivia games and other goodies to really make the viewing a fun event for all. Check it out.)
  • Voting! Their Facebook page has a link for a voting sweepstakes, where you can vote for whom you think should win awards in the respective categories, and every time you vote, you are entered for a chance to receive a free trip to Santa Monica, CA to attend the actual awards presentation, held on Sept. 10th! (Note: you can only vote once per day and voting ends Sept. 5th)

For our readers that will be joining me, in either the Fan Zone or at a watch party, I hope you let me know how it goes! Enjoy!
